What travel skill do you completely lack, despite all these years?
“Sleeping on planes. I’ve watched entire cabins go unconscious while I sit there wide awake like an owl in a neck pillow.”
Who taught you how to travel?
“My grandmother, who took me to Paris at nine and let me choose what we did each day. We saw almost nothing famous and I’ve travelled like that ever since.”
How can you tell within an hour whether you’re going to love a place?
“If I’ve already been made to laugh by someone who isn’t paid to be nice to me, it’s going to be a good week.”
