Simon has worked as a professional photographer and film maker for 18 years. He has received several awards and nominations for his work, which combines commercial and documentary styles creating images full of light, colour and humanity. He has a first class honours degree from Plymouth College of Arts and has always interwoven his photographic practice with teaching, including on countless photographic holidays around the globe.
What do you always say you’ll do on holiday and never once have?
“Keep a journal. I own eleven beautiful notebooks with one page of writing in each.”
What’s the best conversation you’ve ever had with a stranger?
“Three hours with an olive farmer in Puglia, him with no English, me with ten words of Italian. We covered family, football and the correct amount of oil for bread, which is more.”
How do you find the version of a city the guidebooks miss?
“Ask someone what they’re doing this weekend, not what I should see. The first question gets you their city. The second gets you the brochure.”
